Shane knew better than to argue with Jacinta.

The fact that she had been awake for nearly a day, and really should have been laying low and getting some rest didn’t matter. And he couldn’t blame her either. If someone had just spelled his name out in body parts as a prelude to turning him into meat art, he’d probably be feeling the same.

“If he’s looking to do to you something on par with what happened to Machine Man then there’s only so many options, right? The Bowers Plant is out of commission, but what else is around here that has machinery powerful enough to do that to a human body?”

Jacinta shook her head. “I wouldn’t even know where to begin. There are so many factories and plants in Detroit. We’d need something to narrow it down.”

“What’s close to the precinct?” he suggested. If Hawthorn had planned everything out, then he would have shaped his plans around the restrictions of his ghostly range.

“I’m not sure.”

He nodded, turning the wheel again. “Then we need to get back to Jessop. I need to see what he had on him when you took him into custody.”

“Not much, to be honest. A knife, some cash, a phone, his clothes.”

“Jessop said Hawthorn took over as soon as he found the bandana,” Shane added. Shane had seen a wall of them in Hawthorn’s basement back in Canada. It was the only thing some of his victims were able to identify him with—the skull motif on the bandana that covered the lower half of his face. He seemed to take a lot of pride in it; it was his signature. It was the most obvious haunted item.

She nodded. “Yeah. We have it stored in the evidence lock up.”

“Right. Exactly where he wanted it to be. Keeps him close to you, get him out of harm’s way, and gives him a radius around the precinct to cause mayhem.”

“I can get it out of evidence, but I can’t get you in there. There’s no way.”

“Get it to me. I’ll take care of it,” he told her.

“If you start fighting a ghost in the middle of the precinct, it’s going to raise more questions than it answers.”

“Doesn’t have to be in front of anyone. We’ll bring it out here. I have some salt in the trunk. I can bury it in the salt bag and keep him trapped until I can get him someplace alone.”

“It can’t be that simple, can it?” Jacinta asked.

Shane pulled into the lot behind the police precinct and parked in the same spot he had taken before.

“If you think smuggling evidence out of the precinct and stashing it in my trunk is simple, then maybe,” he replied. He turned the engine off and got out with her, heading back into the precinct.

Garvey was still at the desk when they entered. “How long is your shift today, Perez?” he asked, though he was looking at Shane.

“Today? It’s already tomorrow, Garvey.”

“Right. And you? You normally work the night psychoanalysis shift?” he asked Shane.
